i have a question, and since most of you here so far appear to be western riders, i think you can help me. just recently when i take my saddle off my mare, there are either one or two patches that look are dry on her withers.. does this mean the saddle has changed it's fit, and will be hurting her back/making her uncomfortable?

like you mean she's sweating underneath it & on that one spot she's not?

no, probably not. it's that she's sweating, but the air pocket (the empty space under the horn that you pull the pad up into) is just keeping her withers cool. it shouldn't be hurting her at all. thats what the air pockets for. to give them some air.

hahah ok that makes me feel SO much better.lol. one more thing, do you know how to check a western saddle to make sure it fits properly, and that it's not pinching or anything? (not the girth, but the saddle tree and stuff...)

Well I do know the pomel shouldnt be to close to the withers..I'm not that great at explaining it but I can tell when a saddle is pinching or hurting the horse.

if you need help on where the saddle should lay, then all you have to do is put your hand at the pol or below, then wiggle where the mane comes out until it doesn't wiggle anymore & thats where the pad should ly & then i think you can figure out where the saddle goes.

Yeah but I think she wanted to know if the saddle pinches the horse or something, not where to put it..
